View Full Version : Newbielympics and/or something smaller?

Well, it looks like the Newbielympics thread over on the Sentinel hasn't gotten much response. I figure we should have 7 events + opening and closing as a minimum. If Kiriel can do 1 event and I do 3, that is 4 events, so we would only need 3 more. More would be better, but that's what I think is the minimum to pull it off. So, is anyone else willing to do events?
Whether or not we do a Newbielympics, I think we could have a Newbie Sports League where we sponsor newbielympics type events every so often. I could probably do this 1-2 times a month on an ongoing basis, and if others back me up, it could happen more often. I might even be able to do it more often, but I can't commit to 1/week without backup - I will not be available every single week.
So, I'm interested in pursuing both these ideas. Do these ideas have your support? Are there any other ideas that we might all be able to back?

I'm willing to do my marathon footrace, schedule permitting. I'll help with any events I can, again schedule permitting.
I wonder if we should consider some kind of recruitment drive for new WoD members. If there really are a lot of new exiles since the game went free, we might have some prospects of success. Since it seems unlikely the old members will return except on a special-occasion basis, finding new ones may be the best way forward.
In the past we just waited for applicants to come to us, but that was when the clan was a more constant presence in the lands. Now, I think we'd need to go looking.
Such a recruitment drive would probably work best in connection with an event like newbielympics (which is why I bring it up here).

With respect to new members, I think there is a chicken and egg problem here: we need new members to put on events and we need events to recruit new members. My thinking is that if we don't have the existing members to pull off a Newbielypics with or without community support, having newbie events regularly (at least once a month, more if possible) will attract some like-minded folks. I think that the best thing would be to have a Newbielympics followed by regular Newbie Sports League (NSL?) events. If we can pull that off, we might attract new members. But whether or not we attract new members, it would be good to have some clan activity.
It's my feeling that the drought of real newbies was the main contributor to the decline in clan activity. There was a period where we tried having regular newbie hunts and no newbies showed. While I've been very busy the past couple of years, the limited number of newbies was another factor in my not getting a Newbielympics organized - it's hard to see the point if most of the "newbies" are old-timers nth character. So it just didn't seem worth my limited time to do something that would be of very limited benefit to the community. But I too have hunted with real newbies recently, so I think it's worth a try again.

I think it would be great if we had more numbers.
We do have many more (more than 0 = many more) newbies these days, but l wonder how many exiles would feel the need to join a clan in order to help them. If we are thinking of bolstering numbers and focusing on "events", would a clan merger perhaps be something to consider?
Just spitballing.

I'd like to try doing stuff before we think too much about either recruitment or mergers, etc. My thought is that if we can put on a few events, people might come out of the woodwork. So, I'd like to focus on putting on some events, and see how it goes.
So, Nunul, are you up to hosting a Newbielympics event? [;)]
And where is Altir?
/ponder twisting dorf arms is difficult because they are so short and it is hard to get leverage.

Just read Zinx's/Blindkan-C's post on the sentinel. My head wants to explode.

See my reply in that thread. I'd be happy to support their revival. The goal is to put on an event for newbies, not fan old rivalries. If this works, great! If not, at least we can say we tried our best. If they will take our help, then I say we go for it. If they don't want our help, perhaps we should just go ahead and start the NSL idea.

Sorry, I have read this thread and the one on the Sentinel. I just don't understand, sorry (language problem, I am sure).
I can certainly run 2 events for the Newlympics but others are doing it or I didn't understand?
Well, I don't want to run something like the Newlympics if another group is doing it.

It's all in the timing, which you can miss reading the threads after the fact. The thread on the Sentinel appeared to fizzle out, so we started talking about our newbielympics, then it turned out the thread had just moved to the other clan's scrolls.
So now-- unless I've missed something else-- they're doing a newbielympics and we're supporting them, which would include volunteering to run events.
I don't know what the schedule/event list currently looks like. You'd probably want to make sure no one else has already scheduled the events you'd like to host. There's a meeting coming up in the lands, check the Sentinel thread for the time.

Farhope -
Another group saw that we hadn't put on a newbielympics in a long time. They started planning, but we thought their efforts had stopped. We started planning an event. Then, we found out that they had just taken their planning to a private b-board. So now, we are planning to combine efforts. They will take care of the overall planning and we will help them run some events and provide some funds for prizes. In other words, we are co-sponsoring the event.

It looks like they have set dates: April 13-19th. It's not the best time for me, but I do want to see this happen, so I've offered to do 2 events. They have a discussion here:
http://www.eghorus.com/
but it is on a private sub-forum so you have to register and then asked to be added. I hope that we can put in a good showing in running events.
Depending on the turn out (both of Newbies and WoD folk), I think we should look into starting a NSL after the Newbielympics.
