This is probably the reign of whomever becomes New Member Person, but since we don't have one yet, I'll put it out to everyone.

We should come up with a means of discussing individuals we want to join, so we can have reached agreement, THEN invite them. As it is now, people invite people who they think would be good, then we have to stick the hopefuls on stand-by while we make our decision. I would prefer a private location, so they can't check in on what we have to say about them.

Also, we really need to sort out a temporary means of deciding how much support is enough until we have someone to officially make the decisions.
I say that if someone has 6 affirmative votes, and 1 negative, (1 abstain) that that is sufficient to join them, after we all talk to the one with the negative vote and understand their reservations.
If someone has 2 negative votes, we put them on a probation and tell them we need to get to know them better.
5 affirmatives and no negatives should be fine to join someone.
These numbers are all based on our present 8 person clan, and would change as we grow, but do they sound ok as rough approximations?

I concur, it may be that a secion of the site needs to be a password protected forum that we can review and discuss individuals entrance into the clan without having it posted in the public forum. Also, those who may not be able to make a meeting would then know if a vote is coming up in the future.

As far as number of votes, what you have suggested makes perfect sense. If a member has reservations, they should be heard before a decision is made.

Also, from what I remember from the Drakes (and that last fateful talk you and Kiriel had with Amy) the "founders" made all the decisions. Since we are going to be a democracy, with "officers/representatives" being voted in when we grow more members...will we be voting as a clan on new memberships, or will the "officers/representatives" vote on membership?

to simplyfy that.. if 25% of the clan is against them joining its a no. but abstains do not count in that 25%. I like that as a good working number for everything... more then half but still gives people power.

I'm not entirely clear on what 'abstains do not count in that 25%' means. Is it 25% of votes, or 25% of total members?

Nunul, my understanding is that the joining policy is entirely up to the New Member Coordinator. If they want the policy to be 'give them 500c, and swear war upon all new exiles' they could do that (but we'd probably find us a new Coordinator pretty durned quick =).

Whatever the policy is, it will have to be publicly available, so we can make sure that it suits all. I do hope that the system is not one of only officers voting, in fact, I would be more interested in having officers barred from voting (spreads the power out more). But a representative voting body may be needed due to consideration of size, or to ensure that a high enough percentage vote, or other considerations.

So, I think that whoever gets to be our first New Membership person has a whole lot of planning to do to come up with a fair and follow-able plan.
