Greetings all,
While I'm sure many of you are advocates of the good 'ole philosophy of value being whatever the market will bear, I've been thinking for quite some time that there aren't any real sources for current market value for some items. In the effort to create such an on-going value-list, I was wondering if a thread in this oft-frequented forum might suffice. Sooooo... anyone else care to throw up other average values for items they've seen sold/traded recently, or to re-work these values?

Sincerely,
Elenis Reyav

My experience with lilaberries and orgaberries is I never have trouble selling them for 2k. I don't try selling them higher than that, but it's possible they might be worth more. Logs seem to go for 15-25c. I usually give 15c for wheat, 20c for tangleberries, and 30-40c for cacao pods. Sunstones seem to run 600-800c these days.

It's sad that metal is selling for so much. I suppose only fighters who coin-whore like mad will be able to chain anymore. Personally, I feel that raffling or auctioning metal to maximize profit hurts Puddleby in a way that doesn't justify adding a few extra coins to your pocket.

But since in CL, greed is rewarded more than it is punished, I guess this kind of thing is to be expected.

I have to say that the current high price of metal has completely put me off the idea of investing ranks in loovma so I can chain. I just could not afford the cost of the chains. At one time, I thought I'd train with loovma before I trained proxi, but now, it's the reverse.

Do I take offense to this?. erm, maybe.
I am near toes with Loovma. I chain A LOT. Loovma training is the price I pay for my chains. I CW....when I am actively hunting that is. The money from CWing is socked right back into my clan debts.
I have played the metal-raffle game. It helped pay for my Fell. I have also been known to sell metal for 50c.

Perhaps Lex, chainers are not supposed to be a dime a dozen. I view it as a mini-profession. If my chain happens to break, I don't run around CWing like mad to replace it...I train a couple more Loovma and cut my losses. If I was getting 0-1 metal returned from a break...I would be worried.

My prices:

I sell:
Orga or Lilaberries, like Kiri, 2000 coins
Metal: still 80 (yes, I am crazy; btw, I don't have any more metal to sell ;-)
Brambleberries: I even once gived 5 to "sell" it ;-)

I buy:
wheat for 13-15 coins (10 in bakery)
tangleberries for 10-13 coins (8 in bakery)
honey: never more than 19 (it is possible to buy it for 20 in the farm)
myrm egg: never more than 14
cacao pod: as high as 60
spores: 0 (I always find some when I want it)
egg (or feather): 5-8 coins (but it is not difficult to find some, I sometimes hunt scavenger birds to find one)

Regarding metal prices at the moment. Metal is inflated right now. I believe that the 100-150 coins for a piece of metal were far more reasonable. However to balance this, let me say a few things about chaining (since that seems to be their primary use... fie on you ethereal amulet mystics! ;) )

I chain. A lot. I like chaining. I agree with Nunul on the subject and believe that it is a semi-profession. I have invested nearly a hundred ranks in Loovma to extend my chaining. And to be honest, I do spend a good chunk of my time searching for ore in the passes and coining in the New Bear Caves to make coins just for chains. I also believe that despite the current metal inflation, I haven't had to slow down my chaining. Those dedicated to the art of chaining may have to coin a little more when they lose a metal from a chain break. If you want to be a 'casual' chainer, let me give you this bit of advice: Don't. It will cost you quite a chunk of money, and unless you're already wealthy, it has a decent maintenance cost that may break you. (This cost being 1.5-2k/ooc week for me... this with nearly 100 loovma... then again, I do clan a bunch more than most and find a lot of people expect me to do the chaining).

Bottom line: Chaining is not for everyone.

I used to give metal for amulets but I haven't been able to in a long time. Besides, I think the amulet craze is over :)

I've been able to chain normally throughout the metal shortage (if there truly is one), but I used to make chains and give them to healers/mystics a lot, and that just isn't possible now. Also, I've seen a few healers quit chaining over the past couple of months. It's a shame.

As far as item prices, most are so variable or change so much I can't see a value in a list like this, unless it is for newbies to give them am idea of what something is worth.

Here is what I've seen some of these things sold for:

Lilaberries: 1500-2200
Orgaberries: 1000-2000
Gold Ore: not enough in circulation
Luminescent Salve: I have one that I will probably give away :)
Piece of Metal: one headache
Pinch of Catsbane: used to be more, maybe 500-800 now
Red Healing Potion: 200-300
Ruby necklace: again, not enough around to even guess
Uli Flower: 200-250

I just want to cast my dissenting view on the metal cost and chaining issue.

I hate chains. A lot. I recognize that they're great and save otherwise hopeless situations at times. But much more often (at least back when metal was around 50c a pop, when I was clanning regularly) during a bad spot in NWF, I as the healer would be told to sit in the safe cave, and a fighter-chainer would bring me fallen. Yes, it made the scenario much more successful, but it relegated me as the healer to a frickin' battery, which is no fun at all. Fortunately, I don't listen much, and ran out and tried to pick up fallen on my own, but the proliferations of chains made being a rescue healer much, much lamer, since fighters can do it, only better (as they don't risk not having enough Horus).

So blah to your chains, I hope the cost of metal keeps climbing (or they become only accessible to healers and mystics, or something).

Aerick, who has come to wish he were a fighter

(And no, I'm not really as bitter as this seems, it's just years of pent-up repression =)

A note on auctions.

They can be a way of maximizing your profit. But they can also be a way of giving the poor access to an item theymight never be able to afford.

For an exile that has never had 300 coins to rub together, a chance at a sunstone for 3-5c is great. For a Healer or Mystic, or even a new fighter, paying for a ticket for a wooden shield or rapier is an oppertunity to aquire what they can not buy.

Yes, I know the traders will sell these items for a fair value. And they do provide a great service.

Also, IMHO, I dont like seeing raffle tickets priced over 10c. If the item is highly sought after, like instrument parts, offer it low and people will buy many tickets. Offering a ticket for 50c just removes any chance for the poor to afford a ticket. And selling 250 tickets at 4c gets you more than selling 15 at 50c.

If the item is truly rare, or just shouldnt be in just anyones hands, auction it.

Finaly, I wish there was a museum room for the "exile collection" An opertunity to donate items that should not be passed on. Where we could see a display of things like the taintless club, or a glove of the order. Unique items donated by exiles who no longer wish to carry them around, or who are leaving the lands.

Does anyone know the prefix of the 'grey stone'?

C'mon, help fill out the list :)

To address Lex regarding the value of such a list:

Yes, the value of such a list may be only to give newbies a chance at not getting ripped off. But I had intended that the list be kept updated fairly regularly so as to be of continual use to even the non-newbie.

--

To address Aerick and his dislike for excessive chaining:

Well, yea. I think that Nunul addressed this a bit, that chaining is a semi-profession. I feel it should not be for everyone - it should be for times when healers are unavailible, when there is not enough Horus in a group far from home and when all the healers who aren't already busy are too lazy to leave town ;)

Your case of standing in NWF safe cave as a fighter chained fallens to you was certainly a case of excessive chaining. Take comfort in that great chance that this exile probably has their chains break a lot ;)

--

And for completeness.. addressing Bob's post:

I agree :)

Most of the weapons probably sell second hand for about 2/3s of the new price. Same for shield (so about 5-600 id guess, as new is around 800 i think)

CB necklaces arent often sold, but id guess at about 5000c (ie the approx making fee, but no cost for materials).

Daggers i'd guess at free to newbies, or about 100c 3rd+ circle fighters :D

Most of the KI lyfe bits/scarmis egg etc... while relatively rare, hard to get and all, they really have very little practical use to most exiles, and thus the price range is huge. If you happen to find an alchemist missing that one ingredient they will probably pay a fair bit, but most people only see them as "explorer tokens" ....ie proof that one has" been there, done that, got the Tshirt, how cool am i?" kind of thing , rather than much needed ingredients . Given that most keen KI hunters now have CB necklaces, and the curing potion has dropped so much in price, the demand for all these obscure ingredients has vanished.

Powdery white rocks, and usually crystaline pink rocks are often given away free..not seen them trade hands for money in ages. The others are rarer, with i think the soft yellow being the rarest. Again price is highly variable, but as they also have no apparent use at present, its only amateur geologists and the armageddon-hoarders ( you know the type....the one's who keep one of everything, just in case.... [:D] ) who will be willing to pay anything for them.

PoE .... 0-30c
Tykan ... 150c maybe ?
RHP ..... bout 250 i think
LS/LC ...forget which is which, but disease potion worthless..., cure about 1000c id guess ( same as Alice but less hassle to buy)
Curative... same as catsbane i guess, but would anyone buy it ?

Hello,

as far I know the 1000c cure available at Alice is not the
cure for the Lyfe-disease but for the poison of the
little yellow chiggers. The cure for lyfes is more like 11k if
I do remember correctly.

(I can be wrong of course - I am not that big KI expert, I just
happen to have bought the Catsbane Necklace recently 8)
- I did pay a lot more then 500-800c for the Pinch of Catsbane,
but that was several weeks ago. I was told currently 1500-2000c
is not an uncommon price.)

SWC was just under Fat Alice's hut today and they sell the Curative Potion and the Nasty Salve (aka Luminescent Culture) and the Catsbane Necklace but no Luminescent Salve unless you have to do something to get them to sell it to you.

From past experience exploring under Fat Alices Hurt and in other places that dont really concern me I think that Fat Alice does still sell both (or at least she did last time i checked) but only sells them one at a time.
So one time you might go there and she'll be selling a curative for 1000c and another she might be selling the Salve for 16K
(Its only Cori and some of the other exile alchemists who sell for 11K from Fat Alice they arer 16K assuming they are still available)

Kiriel
09-23-2002, 11:21 AM
Actually 16k is for the nasty salve, which is the one which gives the infection not fixes it. Last couple times I checked there was no longer a way to buy the one that cures the infection- that one used to be sold for 11k.

At last check Coriakin was selling the curing salve for 6k- prices have dropped considerably due to heavy exploration of KI and a low infection rate as more folks have purchased catsbane necklaces.

I'd be very impressed if you could get anyone to tell you an Orga stone. I believe the brions offered 50k once before and were laughed at. I'd file orga stones with items like Oak bashers, runesticks, main gauche, maces, etc. etc. in the "Over my dead body" price range.

Far as other item prices go, they vary much more on the old demand and supply theory. Tho in Pudd it is deffinatly a buyers market. Most people don't want to take the time to get a fair or good price from something so they just sell for whatever and then that becomes the set price. Then a week later when someone sells for 50c less that becomes the fair price. The most obvious comparison that I can think of was in the old weapons hut when once every 6 months GS prices went down to 5k for a week. People would always bitch and moan that they went down to 5k once every 6 months so anything more than that was a rip off.

<soapbox> Lets face it.. A player run economy in CL is virtually non-exsistant and not supported by DT. </soapbox>

Simsu

I dont think the brions ever actually offered money for an orga stone if im remembering the same event as you Koppi started yelling out a message from "a messenger" saying that the brions were offering 50K as a reward for an Orga stone.
This message was set up by an exile who for reasons of his own had changed his name to "a messenger" and then retired to the library coming out infrequently as a normal exile (but still bearing the name "a messenger" and participating in normal exile activities.

Some things dont get sold nomatter the asking price, except in very rare occasions where its more likely they are doing it as a favor than as a business transaction.
These are things like orga stones, oak bashers, main gauches and phantasmonomicons (I would add runesticks to the list but they dont exist except as a figment of our imaginations) These are the sort of items that change hands only when somebody leaves the lands and believes they cant take it with them, (who knows how many rare items have been lost by people taking them away with them)

As for the rest of the items Simsu is perfectly correct, in this world we find the items we need rather than produce them meaning they come to us at no cost so we can set our prices to whatever we want. If i wanted to i could sell red healing potions at 50c a time provided i wanted to spend the time collecting uli flowers.
(i must have had a point when i started but i appear to have wandered away from it, ahh yes)

There isnt really a way to standardise prices, at the minute we have a set of conventions saying things like uli flowers sell for 200-250c and jars of honey sell for 12-15c but this can, will and does change depending on the greed of the seller.
Some people sell off things cheap simply inorder to free up space in their pack and this drives the prices down.

People will set their prices at what they think people are willing to pay as the recent rise in the price of metal will attest.
And if they cant sell it for that price they will raffle it and make even more money.

I can think of 5 runesticks in exsistance atm. They are as rare as OB or MG. People that have them don't generally talk about them because they would be pestered by everyone offering to buy them or know what they want for them. Also whenever someone has a super ultra rare item there is always the faction of people who say theu cheated to get it or some GM gave it to them (which I'm not going to say doesn't happen. I've heard some stories about how people found OB and such)

I can attest to Simsu's statement regarding the "GM favoritism" for anyone who gets a rare item. Which is really, really, really frustrating to the player. But oh well.

My intent in starting the thread was not to try to establish some permenant prices. That would be sheer folly. I was just thinking to keep an ongoing thread that would be periodically updated in order for those who can't clan as often as others... to check out what things are currently valued at.

I think I'll start a new thread on GM favoritism. I think it's been long enough after the FMOCR hoo-ha to have another "interesting" disussion.

Really? I had always heard that they didnt exist as regular items and were only brought out on special occasions such as wild days, i guess i stand corrected.

Although the fact that they are so rare means they have been relegated to little more than a status symbol that no-one else can ever know about.
Are these Runesticks ever used? highely doubtful because that would publisise them and start up the torrent of questions they are trying to avoid.

But if they are never used and people dont let on to others that they have them what is the point in their existance? or are they solely for the benefit of the player who holds one so they can glory in the fact that they have a rare item while very few others do even if they cant tell anybody about it?

This really defeats the point of it being a useable item, IMO items are there to be used not to be hidden and gloated, over Mjollnir doesnt gloat over the fact that he has a passkey (well not much anyway but he is always willing to help people to get in and out of the back doors of the brion keeps)

I've been using Malkor's runestick for quite some time now. I don't use it all the time, but on occasion, the runes can prove to be quite valuable and do a fair amount of damage. Still not sure of what value the rain cloud serves.

OOC:

I have a slight problem with runesticks because they are a PK device in a supposedly non-PK game. I'm a bit surprised they were ever allowed to come into existance because they can also be used as ranged weapons. They seem to violate a number of the stated design philosophies of the game.

IC:

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised the Bunny let a clan-mate use his stick. But those things are danerous! I've been injured at least once, possibly twice, by Mystics wielding them. Once in town when Malkor murdered Bouncy and injured myself, and the second time was possibly the other Zodiac on the FMOCR when Callia attacked me, although I didn't have the time to see if what she held was actually a runestick.

I had a chance to use a runestick along with everybody else on Wild Thursday the best i saw it kill was a rat and it didnt even damage much above that. Can I just ask where do you use it and how useful is it really? aside from keeping pests away from corpses?

As for a weapon please correct me if im wrong but i couldnt get a rune to zap an exile except by accident, if they happened to be standing on one when it expired.
Because they have negligable benefit i would still say they are little more than status symbols, who really wants to run round reapplying runes simply to keep the rats from biting?

The rain function doesnt appear to have any actual effect any more than the bard belt does, its something to look at nothing more except as an RP item, pehaps if you wanted a character with a name like Big Chief Rain-on-Face or somebody set you on fire (if the rain function actually could douse fires that'd be great)

So if youve been attacked by a runestick chances are you were just standing on a rune when it expired and you got caught in the blast

As for them being a PK device could you kill anybut the weakest exiles with one? its a PK device in the same way the cod gong is a PK device.
Although i do agree about the ranged weapon issue, if nothing else it weakens the monsters before they get to you

I believe the strength of the rune is determined by your "body" strength, something present in Evus and Bodrus. That means a fighter would be MUCH more effective in using a runestick. I know one use, once upon a time, was for killing greater deaths and other such things nobody had the Atkus to hit.
