I don't really have the time to research this myself right now, but it occured to me that someone here might know the answers to my questions. So, here goes -

I use x-windows applications a fair bit. I run Xfree86 (aka XDarwin) in rootless mode because I switch back and forth between Aqua and Xwindows applications a lot. By default XDarwin used the positively ancient twm - it was the first X window manager I learned, more than 10 years ago. It is familiar and does most of what I need it to do, but it seems a bit of a kludge by today's standards and there are a few annoyances. Yesterday, when looking for another app, I stumbled across OroborOSX (v0.8b2), which is a much nicer looking window manager that uses XDarwin. It fixes some of my annoyances with twm/XDarwin, but not all. That's the background, here are the questions:

(1) How stable is OroborOSX v0.8b2? - it is labeled as a beta. I know that with Free Software like this, the current beta release is frequently much better than the non-beta of the previous version.

(2) Does anyone know of a X-windows set up that lets you cut and paste between Aqua and X windows? I use the OSX terminal application as my default so that I can do this sort of cut and pase, but it is annoying when I can't cut from an xterm and paste into a word processing doccument and vice-versa.

(3) Does anyone know how to make "lpr" work? (going beyond x-windows now)

(4) Has anyone clustered desktop OS X macs over a local network? If so, what, if any, additional software is required or do you recommend? (We currently have a 500MHz DP/Gig E-net and 3 1GHz DP (2 new style, 1 old style)).

Check out www.macosxhints.com
There might be some stuff there. I've found some valuable info at that site...

I believe I have read about beowolf clustering of mac's if that is what you mean by clustering. The software was free, from some university or other. I'm not sure where i read it, just google beowolf.
