Got to ask that after all. I am carrying this question around since ages (well, nearly, anyway ;) )

What is the distance one can grab someone with a chain from?

If there are no critters, its easy of course. But when there were critters, I have seen such a difference in distances, I just cannot get a clue. I saw people chaining from a HUGE distance (at least 5 layers of vultures) and figured I just have to step up next to the munchers. That worked well for many situations. But yesterday, I tried to grab someone in spiritwood surrounded by a couple layers of rats. No way could I get her. Fortunately Lundar came around and killed a couple of rats (while we healers held the GV and stuff :) )

Was it maybe just that 1 layer of rats too many?

On a side-note, I didnt have the time to ask Lundar. Is that a mystic thing that he obviously had enough balance to swing, or did we healers maybe also keep the sprigs busy?

The only 'mystic thing' he might have done is use balance boosts, but you'd presumably have noticed that. Otherwise he was most likely simply using a weapon with good balance...dagger/wands or clubs probably.

From my own observations, id say that max chaining distance was less than one exile's space away, but seems to vary abit depending on the angle from which you approach...one must certainly be very close

Are you sure the chainer didnt already have them on the chain then wander around ?...the chainee wont move with them if blocked by scenery/critters. As far as i know, its not possible to start chaining somone from this distance.

Pretty sure, yes. The whole group fled to another snell, I went north again to get the fallen, and when I saw the critters I thought 'no way can I reach him'. Someone else came north, and just grabbed him. Hm, maybe I even have a visionstone of that. Will go look, and if I have one, study it in detail.

My experience is that it's about one exile's length away that you can chain from. When people are covered with critters it can get tricky, but usually there's a spot in the critter cover that's not quite as far out, and if you get in there you can chain quick. I haven't done any real experiments with it tho.

Hoi,

Imho and experience you can chain just a (small) exlie away, like a dwarf or halfling;). say two rats or a GV...
