Hello all,
For a mere 250c bargain I got the language ledger from pog'lyot.
Borrowing a ledger from someone else will result in an usuable book, I've try it (and learn that *some* have 200 Dentir !!! beat me)
You currently hold ledgers from these trainers: halfling, sylvan, people, thoom, dwarven, ghorak zo
To save precious and valuable time of all (and with my apologies to Rincewind, Mjollnir, and many other n TC), here is the result of you evaluation:
Hail exile, you have much to learn.
there seems to be some problem with Sylvan,Thoom and Zo (ooc as teacher have a blank or a ' in their names)
however, when I try to teach the real thing, i got either a
Exile already speack the Thoom tongue
or
an offert to the exile to learn this tongue, which in can accept or refuse.
(I believe he accept me in traditionnal puddlebian way)
So, I submit myslef to the position of clan linguist, and I will provide Free of charge all lessons to those new exile who have forgotten the way their ancestors speaks.

Some other exiles train in verbal skills as well: Michael holds a ledger from T'rets, and Hidden one from Casm'Sar. I am sure their are others that I havn't encountered yet.

That's right! I can teach you important principles, like how a double negative ain't not a positive, but a double positive isn't a negative. Yeah, right.

Did you /bug it?
I plan on learning many more languages but I wanted to learn Dwarven first.
Please keep us informed when this is fixed.
P.S. Congratulations on your first student. May it be the first of many. [:)]

Congrats Arch!
Are there lots of language trainers out there? Before Arch I don't think I had heard of any...

hello,
Other language trainer include Bon Temps and Wormtougue.
There are prolly two others, but I can't remember their names.

(Following a discussion with Rincewind: you must know all 6 tongues to get the ledger, you must buy it to use it (borrowing one won't do), and you cannot teach volcoons (anyone knows it ?))

I would guess that there will be many language teachers, as getting a language ledger takes less than 150 ranks of training. Once you have a ledger, you can teach any of the languages (according to /use ?), but I haven't actually picked up any students yet, so I can't verify.
To my knowledge, no exile speaks Volcoon, the Language of Magic ('brions), the language spoken by Qual to the T'rools and the 'noths, or the language of the Ancients.

Actually a lot of people trained the languages before they were "fixed". You used to be able to get any non-native language for 15 ranks, so for 80 you'd get them all.

Darn, I wish my non-human character was around when you could train 15 ranks for a non-native language. *laughs*
I got annoyed when the trainer said to me still thinking 15 was the magic number, "Your persistence is paying off." And it took me 25 ranks to get my character a second language beside his native language.

Don't worry -- all the rest will be 15.
The bug was that common suddenly became a forgettable language and thus counted as "foreign" (for everyone except undisclosed and humans, I suppose, who train foreign languages cheap anyway), so you already had one and the rest were 15 ranks.
The fix was VERY recent, actually. As I recall, within the last few months.

Hello,
When I learned all the language, I spend
5 for Thoom and 15 for others (80 lessons)
There are now two theories
5 for native, 25 for non native
5 for native, 25 for first non native, 15 for other
yielding 100 lessons in later case and 130 in former
Archemar
(and we still need to figure if there is a blank bug:
only one blank (or dash) seems allowed in the names involved,
names involved are those of exile teacher, exile student and NPC teacher, this would prevent me from teaching(and judging as well) sylvan (Babelle Lyrn), thoom (Par Troom ?) or dworf (Lana Garaka) to Bob the Archer or Kiriel D'sol,
likewise Bon Temps can't teach (not judge) those three tongues to anyone)
Sunblaze

I think #2 is the logical one, because it makes all characters in the game have to train 90 ranks to learn all the languages.
GM's may of added an opposing language system that makes it longer to train for non-human on a language or the first non-native language learned be 25 ranks.

Archemar, have you tried using the language names instead of the trainer names? You also shouldn't need to specify the whole name of the student, just enough to get a unique match.
Konoko

just enough to get a unique match
Like click.splayer or whatever it is (sorry - I'm at work and not near my macros)? That should work I would think if you get a macro setup.
I think Kiri's right - aren't there a number of different ways of naming the actual language (like fen and people for instance)? I thought I remembered a CL what's new thing about this a number of chaos storms back...

If this ledger uses the same name comparison methods as other items, you should be able to write your desired student's name without spaces, capitalization and punctuation. So, Bob The Archer could be written into your ledger as "bobthearcher" and Kiriel D'Sol could be written as "kirieldsol".
Similarly, you should be able to omit the spaces in the names of the language trainers, or you could just use the race names.

System #2 is absolutely correct, according to Ann on CSMGA a while back.
Archemar -- you can just type it "BabelleLyrn" or "KirielDSol", like option-click prints out (assuming you don't have any opt-click macros, anyway). Voila, no spaces or dashes.
Either way, I'll see about getting one of my characters a language ledger and testing this out later.
You can use the language names (dwarven, ghorak zo, people) or certain equivalents (dwarf, ghorak, fenneko) instead of the trainer names.
Right now you can't use full trainer names for language trainers with two-word names (Lana Garaka, Par Troon, Babelle Lyrn), but you should be able to after Wednesday's update. Several other problems with language ledgers have also been fixed, and a few small changes made.
Whenever any item or command needs a character's name, it's always safe to enter it compacted, without any spaces or punctuation marks, the way option-clicking gives it. Upper- and lower-case don't matter either. "Kiriel d'Sol" can be entered as "kirieldsol", "Bob the Archer" as "bobthearcher". The shortest unique part will work too: as long as nobody else with a compacted name starting with "kir" is on, you can use that for Kiriel d'Sol. If that ever doesn't work, it's a bug. (Oh, one exception: when you're removing a clan treasurer, you have to give the full name, with exactly the right punctuation. That's because you can remove people who aren't online at the time.)
It's sometimes okay to enter a character's full name, with all its spaces and punctuation marks, but that's not guaranteed.
For a while there was a bug that gave non-human, non-concealed people a 10-rank discount on the first foreign language not their own. That was fixed about 6 months ago.

Hello,
I'll test after next chaos storm.
If using tongue instead of trainer, or compact name instead of full had worked, I wouldn't have /bug it.
Plainly Bon Temps couldn't check my thoom, nor could I teach thoom to Ani-mal, using either unique abreviation or compact name.
enough say, we'll check it "soon".

What makes you so sure no GM was reading it (or even posting) before?
For that matter, what makes you sure I am who I say I am? Anybody could take the username "Ann" here and start saying all kinds of stuff. Be careful, indeed! [:)]

Good point and I've sent an email to the email that Ann GM uses on Usenet and have asked her to verify whether she's subscribed to this message board. If she says that she hasn't then I'm certain proper steps can be taken to remove your ability to post here.
No offense meant if you really are Ann GM, just being careful as you advise.

Well, I'm 99.99% positive no GMs were posting here before (even as players), though I admit I have no way of telling if GMs were reading the board previously. It seems likely though, given that it's been linked to as a "more sensible" forum (read: fewer flame-wars) in many, many newsgroup discussions.
For that matter, what makes you sure I am who I say I am?
You haven't said anything "out of character" yet, or indeed I think anything you haven't said in past fairground chats/newsgroup discussions. As far as that goes, there's no particular reason you HAVE to be the real Ann GM, as long as you say the exact same things :)
As either you or Helpful once put it (can't remember which at the moment; it's late; sue me), some of us older players can dish out the "party line" just as well as you guys can most of the time.
