View Full Version : Do any trainers cost defense?

Hi.
Lately I've been noticing that a lot of things seem to hit me more often than they used to, even when I'm at full balance. Even rats are tagging me with alarming frequency (they don't hurt me very much, but a swarm of them can still pose a hazard).
I know that more atkus costs swings, since a more accurate swing uses up more balance. I thought at first that because of this I was just swinging out more often than I realized, but I've been careful about that lately and the problem seems to occur even at full balance.
Do any trainers actually reduce the level of defense while at full-balance? Or is this all just my overactive imagination?
If it's not my imagination, then do any of the experienced fighters in the clan have advice on proper ratios of different trainers to avoid the problem?

Some of the 3rd/4th circle trainers do.

Has anything changed about yourself? Is it only your training, or have you changed your equipment?

I haven't changed equipment in some time; I've been using a rapier for a while now, and I've got the same clothes as always. Do unequipped things in your inventory make any difference? I wouldn't think so.
It's quite possible that it's just been a statistical fluke and an active imagination (insert blonde joke here). But it has been nagging at me for a while.

No trainers besides Anglisa and Knox (which both take away ~1/20th of a Detha per rank) for 3rd circle fighters reduce your defense at all. So yeah, it's probably just a fluke. CL's random number generator is a bit streaky, so it's possible to see patterns where none exist.
No basic trainer takes away anything, although as you note it can look like they are (Atkus reduces your swings, Balthus lengthens the time it takes for you to go from no balance to full, and so on).
As Hidden says, a couple of the advanced trainers give you two ranks' worth of one trainer and take away one rank of another, roughly speaking, but they try to make it clear what will happen, and I don't think you'd be training with any of them yet.
Good random number generators are sometimes "streaky". Random number lists that have no streaks are as bad (non-random) as ones that have too many. For instance, in a string of 100 perfectly random coin flips, the chance that there be at least one streak of 5 heads in a row is 96%. (See http://www.csicop.org/si/9809/coincidence.html.) Human perception tends to pick out streaks as unusual, but they're entirely expected, normal, and random.

Whenever that happens to me, I check to make sure I haven't left my Orga eye on. Sometimes its orga eye forgetfulness syndrome and sometimes its just one of those days.

I've put an Orga Eye macro on my scroll which helps reduce OE syndrome [:)] - it puts an annoying reminder in the text message area periodically until you remove it.
Look for it here (http://drablak.pucks.org/hw/fNav/gd/Macros/oe.html) .
