View Full Version : What exactly does /block do?

I know what /ignore does, since I have two people on my /ignore list. What exactly does /block do? Does it also have the muting effect that /ignore has? Does it also turn them into a transparent outline with no nametag like /ignore does? I note that people on my /ignore list can still heal me.

Another think I'd like to know is whether people think of these tools as IC or OOC.

\BLOCK <PLAYER> Sets a player to be blocked. You will not hear anything they say.

\IGNORE <PLAYER> Sets a player to be ignored. You will not hear anything they say, and they will be invisible.

That's from the "/help <command>" option. Ignore gets rid of sunstone communication, /actions, /ponders, /narrates. I don't know if karma messages can get through or not.

I can't think of any good IC reason for these. I mean, if someone says something, your choice to ignore them is yours. You still hear the words, though.

OOC it's good to have filter options in when you have SNERT ALERT conditions. Not a biggie in CL.

I had an interesting experience with /block. I had a cadding macro that used a 'shift-control-click' to heal exiles with a cad (and 'control-slick' to use staff). I changed it to 'shift-click.' But, of course, I accidentally did 'shift-control' now and then, on the first hunt after the macro change.
During the course of the hunt, people just...stopped...talking. And the few folks who WERE talking, weren't making sense. Then folks began disappearing.
It turns out that "shift-control-click" defaults to /block <exile>, followed by /ignore <exile>. It took a long time to figure out what the heck was happening. I /bugged it and /bugged it (/bug when I click on people I can't hear them, how can I fix it?). Then I got scared to click on someone, for fear of making them disappear...

It was a weird hunt. Quiet too ;-))

When I am taking visionstones for maps, I /ignore myself. It helps focus attention on the snell, not on me.

OK, thanks, especially for the fine details (like sunstone messages) that aren't in the help messages. [:)]

I also feel that they are very OOC, but I wanted some other opinions as sometimes I am a little surprised by where people put the IC/OOC boundary.

"blocking" or "ignoring" someone is something OOC for me... but it's sometimes necessary to enjoy the game (I never did it so far).

Ya sure they weren't jest in awe o yer fashion sense?

Fer me, I founded it were dangerous when I had a fella on /ignore. He moseyed inta town after swearin a mighty oath he were bound fer tha mainland. I thoughted tha ghosties was all o a sudden in their 'gratis bodies instead o cloaked folks. Tooked me a moment ta realize tha ghosty were tha /ignored fella.

Ya might wanna check since my beer addled brain might could be rememberin wrong. Fer me /block seems ta let stuff through ta tha "text log" way o me hearin stuff and /ignore dont even let me 'member it that way.

I finds tha two useful for limited times ifn a conversation in town or via sunstone be distractin me too much from thinkin 'bout beer.
