Q1:Why do you want to join Winds of Dawn?

Q2:In what ways do you enjoy helping new exiles?

Q3:What do you enjoy doing when you are out of the Library?

Q4:What do you not enjoy doing?

- - -

A1:I played for over a year in a PC-based MMORPG called 'Neocron', where I was a co-founding member of a clan which helped new members learn and adapt to the game. We quickly became well-known and respected, since in this world, there is no party, political, or faction neutrality possible - yet we remained as neutral as possible to all 'opposing' elements of the world. It was a grand time, and I have very fond memories of this game, but alas, the game became too buggy to play, and a promised expansion pack forced me to re-evaluate whether I wanted to pay $50 USD/month to continue with my 5 alt characters. The friendship bonds which were created with new and veteran player will be something i'll never forget - akin to my early 'Army' days in real-life - a camaraderie which I seek to this day - now in CL.

A2:This is no easy game for a new player. I think the learning curve here is as hostile, complex, and confusing as Neocron is. I had very little guidance at the start, but a few in-game characters did lead me around, showed me the fairgrounds, town hall, towncenter, etc etc. Took me on a few hunts in VT and KB and so forth, showed me the Towers. It's what I would have done, and have already started to do so, with 'Agratis' players making their appearance from time to time in TC. It's my calling, it's in my blood. I can't resist to assist those in need. It's what I do in real-life too. Call me a sucker, but I just can't resist helping those out in need. The ultimate reward is friendship; the goal is easing someone along the path to betterment.

A3:I hone my skills, and talk with a great number of players new and old. I've been trying to find friendly faces and bond with them. I find it a bit hard in this game to earn the trust of your peers, but I am trying. There seems to be, for the most part, mostly good and kind players here, and most of which as veteran players of CL. On the other hand, there's a smattering of new or 'recent players' with arrogant and quick-to-judge attitudes that sometimes turn me off the game. Thankfully, I've come to indentify these players and walk around them. An example is, on my 2nd time playing CL as a registered user, I was hunting in the Hives with a veteran thoom fighter and an undisclosed race healer. I was invited to this hunt, despite me telling them I was NEW. Like, NEWWWW. Never killed more than a rat or vermine. Here I was getting killed repeatedly by Myrm Protectors and worse, and then, for no real reason, the healer gave me bad karma, "Because I died too much". I still have this bad karma to this day, despite having far more Good Karma given to me since. Do I feel like avenging his actions? No. Can this 'Newer player' be lectured to become an abiding citizen, and adopt certain morales and ground rules to be a better player in-game? Perhaps. Is it my place? Not really - he should have had better 'New player assistance' at the start, much like the first three years of parenthood to a new-born. Perhaps this is an individual who will never really understand the underlying purpose of CL, and instead Role-play as bluntly as possible, damaging and injuring everyone around him. Heck, he said it - foot-in-mouth - shortly after the issue: "I don't think I want to be a Healer anymore - can I switch professions?". BONG. Sounds like this player never got a 'helping hand' at the start of his registration. That's where we should step in.

A4:I don't enjoy sitting around, doing nothing. I don't enjoy watching new players getting repeatedly killed by rats and vermine, and then eventually quitting the game for good. I don't enjoy playing CL all alone, which is what i've been doing pretty much for the last 2 weeks ooc. I don't enjoy trying to get in on a simple and safe hunt and being told it's a "Private Hunt - go away". I don't enjoy the fact that this game is still sprite-based, when i have a top-of-the-line Mac system, and it feels like i'm stuck in the mid-90s, gaming-wise. I realize there are some OpenGL initiatives out there, but the Delta Tao developers really need to step into the 21st century here... Not everyone still use LC II and Mac IIsi's. I don't enjoy solo'ing this game, being out of a clan, and generally wasting my potential, in-game, when i could be of far greater use contributing to a greater and collective good.

Well, there you have it. I'll try to figure out where the Myrm Highlands are and attend the meetings. I work at home, so it shouldn't be too hard to see you there soon...

Best,

-bonk.

Nice to meet you Bonk! I hope to see you at one of our meetings soon, hopefully the times are ones you can make? The Newbielympics also start this weekend, I hope you'll be able to participate!

Some general comments about your experiences:

- I believe that some of the players you meet with those "quick to judge attitudes" are probably actually experienced players starting new characters. Some of them tend to forget there are those out there that are truly new and they tend to act rather strangely.

- Regarding the hive, it's actually designed as an appropriate location for truly new folk to hunt, especially with assistance, although clearly it's more difficult than killing rats. It's a shame your first visit was with someone who would react that way to you though! I've never heard of anyone treating a new exile that way before, but if he was new as well, that might explain why he was unfamiliar with common etiquette.

- Bad karma does fade over time, just as good karma does. Don't worry, it'll go away. Some folks use bad karma without good reason, it's best just to ignore such things, don't let it hurt you. Good people will judge you by your character, not your karma.

- Regarding the graphics, I actually like them :) I've played games with fancier graphics and I find that graphics usually have very little to do with my enjoyment of the game. There are actually a surprising number of people playing the game on PCs under emulation too, so 68k support is believe it or not, actually used.

If you have trouble finding the highlands, just ask around and probably someone will be kind enough to escort you there. The Newbielympics opening ceremonies are this coming Saturday at noon pacific time (GMT-7) at bard's field, so perhaps we can meet you there!

Hi Bonk!
for no real reason, the healer gave me bad karma, "Because I died too much".

I am very sorry to hear that. Being a newbie once, I also fell a lot of times. The lands are full of all kinds of people! [:(]

Bad karma does fad with time. Also practice giving good karma as much as you can, when it is appropriate.

Thank you for answering our questions. I enjoyed reading them.

I've been reading to many books in the Library as of late. I really need to get out more.

\action "Steady looks at his pale skin."
\ponder "no tan, I need to get out more"

When I get out I will look for you! [:)]

For your interest, I am one of the people who plays on a PC with a 68K Mac emulator. Thankfully Joe has been kind enough to keep up dating the playing files for 68K. [:)]

Hello,

Despite your warm welcome and supportive gestures in-game, I feel that I must bring a formal closure to my request to join WoD.

Winds of Dawn members have shown nothing short of the best respect and friendship towards me and my desire to join this reknown clan - so don't take it personally that I no longer wish to pursue the road to joining it.

I've decided to alter my attypical role-player model in CL, and have instead decided to stay as a Fighter and pursue this class to its fullest. I had intended to take the route of the mystic class within a few weeks or months of joining CL, using the fighter class to explore the lands and get a lay of the game, so to speak. However, I've taken a real hankering to the fighter class, and feel I wouldn't fit too well within WoD's mandate and mission statement.

As such, i'm in the latter 'proving' stages of joining the Sun Dragon Clan.

Be well, and I hope we'll remain friends.

Best,

Bonk.

Bonk, it was great to meet you. One of the reasons we have the complicated application process we do, is because we feel strongly that joining a clan is a huge decision, and not one to be made without much contemplation. There's nothing wrong with changing your mind, and if you feel Winds of Dawn is not the best fit for you it's definitely the right thing to do. It certainly doesn't mean we would think any less of you, and of course you're always welcome at our events :) Sun Dragon Clan is a fine clan and I'm sure if you end up joining them you'll be very happy there.

I should be sacked! Here's an application that went from first stages to closed without my even noticing it!

You can barely make out the letters anymore!
I've been busy, but things are clearing up, and I'll try to be better. [:(]
