View Full Version : Sunstone

I was asked by Aerick after Ender left whether I want the sunstone he (Ender) gave back to the clan. At the clan meeting today the issue came up again and I was told by some members to please take it. I refused.

I'd like to explain myself, although it's hard to put into words. I remember when I got my shield 4 IC months ago. I was saving all my exile-life for this. [although I used quite a bit of the money to give others or to use Stone-that-talk to locate someone (that can be costly I can tell you ;)]
But in the end I had saved enough and asked Farhope to get me a shield, since only fighters can buy one. It felt so great to get this shield! It protects me whereever I go and I'm so happy I saved for it. Farhope suggested that I should rather save for a sunstone than for a shield. While it's prolly true that sunstones are very handy for a healer, I put all my effort into the shield to pass the 2nd circle healer test. Yes I know I could have lend a shield from someone, but... I felt so happy when I did this myself.

There are few things in this world I want to get myself or could never give away once I have it. (my moonstone, a sunstone and something special I got from someone..) [If I should ever run around without my moonstone, that's certain death...]

I hope that noone feels bad about my decision of declining the sunstone.. It's not that I don't want to help the clan. I'd do anything to save you guys! I *will* get a sunstone, I promise. :)

Ok, that's it for now. Hope I could explain myself a bit.

Sargon,
You just voiced the reason that I vehemently opposed the existance of a clan fund in the Silver Drakes. At the time, I didn't think that anyone should be deprived of the thrill of earning their own precious possessions. I've since learned that there are many differing points of view on the matter, and that we should work for all of them. I respect your decision on this matter. The damned log of wood I found is still going to you! One way or another.... =)

It is good Sargon that you was albe to keep your decision despite our strong pressures.
I am sure you will get one!
But you can understand that for US, it is a good feeling to help you to have one :-)

Um.. I'm thinking about starting to train with Mentus a bit. Do people think that's a good idea to prevent a potential sunstone to wear off too fast? How much should I train with him? i thought of about 20 ranks.

/action promises Eva to return to her training soon

It might not hurt to train some mentus, but FYI my healer has had a sunstone for months and it hasn't even worn one level yet.

10 to 20 should be plenty. I have 10 and its worked fine so far.

I am deathfully afraid not to have enough mentus to keep my treasured SS from cracking (or even wearing). I also have taken advice to heart as far as sharing with a mystic at least while sending messages.

about Mentus:

From Rincewind: "with 10 lessons, you are immuned to Deadly poppy!"

From Adua: "I have 30 and had never any problem with my sunstone!"

I have a worn sunstone. It was worn when I got it used. I have no mentus.

I've had the sunstone for a few months and it hasn't worn any further...

hehe Mentus does nothing! its all useage and the type of useage the rest is random. thinktos use it less then a think. the rest is random for wear, some have had them last an OOC year some less. its all usage.

Umm...
Ender, where do you come by your information? You do seem to be well informed.

Being equally well informed, I'll field this question <g>:

* Well, first of all, he was around pre-war, albeit not as Ender. Back then, the GMs were WAY looser with information.
* A lot of this stuff is pretty easy to pick up if you listen to everyone and ask lots of questions. Almost everyone knows/has observed something useful. Even me! (that GDs don't attack people in undine costumes)
* The newsgroup is a great source of info. HGM is giving out a surprising ammount if you care to listen with unbiased ear. Whining gets you nowhere, you'll notice nobody ever listens or responds to Outcast.
* You can test a lot of things out on your own with a 2nd character and a bit of time.

HTH!

P.S. Ender, I'd suggest encoding your OOC/Game mechanics info in ROT13 as a courtesy to those who don't like spoilers. Also, Mentus has no proven effect, but that doesn't mean it has no effect.

What do you guys use to encode/decode ROT13? I'm surely able to write a program on my own but I don't know what range of the ASCII-table is rotated. Please don't answer in ROT13. ;)

oh i know what Mentus DOES effect but it dosent help sunstones from wearing. your right im from prewar, but WAY prewar. most everything i know comes from GMs and exiles who have been GMish at one point of time.

Although Aerick as the treasurer prolly has the final word, I'd like to ask the clan how much the sunstone that the clan currently owns would cost me to buy. Also I'm wondering what the state of the sunstone is. I hope it doesn't explode after I send my first message? :)

I believe the purchase price was 2000c
(quite a bit less than the prices I've seen them going for lately)

The Sunstone was purchased for 2000c, and will sell for that, or Elendil's price (whichever is lower).
I do not believe that Ender used it much at all, and it has not degraded by a level. My understanding is that the Stone has an equal chance with each use of degrading, so a brand new one could theoretically pop after only 4 uses, and one could theoretically be used forever.

Quite true. The stone is in EXACTLY the same condition it was when it was new. And here's the proof:

Ok, on 01-01-01 (choose your favourite date-format) I finally got my sunstone! Yay! So you can stop asking me. =P I wanted to wait until Aerick is in the lands to get the one from the clan, but since the price was at 1569 I simply couldn't wait! (It took me 6 ooc month to get an SS, now I couldn't even wait some hours.. Sheesh!)

I'm not sure whether the SS really helps me in rescueing others though. Since I now know when a party goes to Snaggy I'm very tempted to go there too. While it's certainly not a place for me (and prolly never will be) it was fun to see this area for once. (I was in orga village! =) Ok! Enough chatting.. back to wor err.. the library with me!
