Don't get too close to him and say something like "teach me pathfinding" or "marsh hermit teach me pathfinding" and he'll eventually ask you if you want to learn from him. I think he's a little deaf because you may have to ask him a couple times before he'll respond.

You can say something like "oh wise old hermit of the marsh, would you please teach me the mysterious ways of pathfinding." Or, you could just say "teach me" (or is it "train me" - it's been so long I forget). It is true that he doesn't always seem to hear you the first time.

Marsh hemit usuallys asks me if I want to train him is I just say "train me" Also you can check your marsh hermit trainer progress message by just saying "progress" It's true that you can't be in his face to say it, and you kinda have to give him time to respond or repeat yourself... crazy old hermit.
