It interest me how people picked their name in CL. How did you choose your CL name?
Does it have any special meaning or other significance?
Althus

I have 6 characters, and I chose each of their names in a different way.
Sephorus (my first character) was a small modification of Sephiroth, since that name was taken.
Althus took the ever popular "Al" and the "us" ending in Sephorus and added a "th" in the middle.
Another character I took out of a Terry Pratchet novel, Rincewind should know him well ;)
Hidden I bought with that name, so I don't know.
The other two I'd prefer to keep to myself, but one is a very generic name, and the other I got Kiri's help picking out.

All my character names came from books by Michelle West (The Sun Sword Series). Kiriel in particular was a name I really liked, and once I used the book for that name, I figured I might as well get the others from the same author since she has such interesting names. I especially like going by Kiriel because Kiri is very close to Cari, so I always know when folks are talking to me :)
Aerick

Aerick is a varient of my name (Eric) that I used for Warcraft II, after I decided that using 'Manetheren' was risky, in case I ever lost, I would bring disgrace on the name. (Manetheren is from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series).
It was an attempt to make it slightly different, shooting for the AE greek thingy, and the 'k' just seemed to balance it better. BTW, does anyone know how Aerick should be pronouced? Someone said it should be 'EYE-RICK', I had kind of thought 'AY-ERK'. Any linguists?
My other characters use names that I stole from names I made up. One as a town in a live-action role-playing game, and one as the middle name of my character in our tabletop game.
Those I invented by slapping sounds together until it sounded 'fantasy-esque' but I've used them so much, they sound kind of boring to me now.

Arteress Lai stands for "Lilly of the Earth", in the language I made up from the land Lilly is from.
I encouraged people to call her Lilly early on in her life, because she was earning the nickname "Art", instead of Lai, when Lai is actually the first name, and Arteress the surname. it is pronounced "Art-air-iss Lie". My other character has actually got a rather snerty name, given to him because he was based on a Shadowrun character i had been playing so long I had forgotten his name was very assinine.
Sargon

Hi!
Wow, you people really thought about what name to choose! As for Sargon, it's the name I choose anywhere in the net. It's the name of an Assyrian (I think) king and a chess program is named after it. Many years ago a friend tried to tell me something and mentioned my real name several times but I didn't listen. When he mentioned the word 'Sargon' I listened. Since then, friends call me Sargon IRL too. (wish it was my RL name :)
As for the other characters (I have 3 others, but only play 1 of them kinda regular) I'm not sure whether you want to know.. If you want to know, just let me know. :) [But then I guess most know at least one... Farhope may know two :)]

Play-by-Mail
That is how I kinda got my start in this type of game. From normal Avalon Hill and normal RPGs to Play-by-Mail games to Play-by-E-Mail games to (a) MMORPG.
Most of my games have some similarities - depth, intelligent players, and complexity beyond hack-and-slash (CL is actually my no-think game as it is the only one that lacks economic/military simulation elements).

Both my characters' are named after characters in Roger Zelazny stories. If you know Zelazny, you probably have tumbled to the other character's ID. If you aren't familiar with his work, go read his stuff - he was a wonderful writer.
Corwin is the junior one, having first arrived in (old) Puddleby in the mid v30's...soon after the healer class was created.
The other character was exiled to the Islands in the early teens. Anyone else remember touching the altar to heal? No professions? No clans? Going for walks on the ocean? No other weapons than clubs? When scavenger birds were called seagulls? Those were the days!

hehe Kiri... there, I registered!! It hurt, it cost me thousands of braincells, but I managed to do it!!
Anyway, on to my post...
Go Corwin!!
Zelazny has been my favorite fantasy/SF writer since I was 10 years old. I have the Chronicles of Amber at least 50 times (and am in fact rereading it now). I even got to meet him once at a martial arts tournament in Arizona...the man was a god.... To this day Lord of Light is one of the most original and well written books that I have ever read.

Now you just need an avatar :)
Coriakin
07-15-2001, 12:51 AM
Hey all!
Coriakin is a character in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", the third (or 4th, depending on how you count them) book in C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia." It's a series of childrens' books about a series of children who enter a land of magic and adventure. If you can get past all the religious undertones, they're really good.
In the book, Coriakin is a fallen star, and I was originally going to RP him as one, but then I realized that there was no way in hell I would be able to do something like that. :)

Nice Cor,
I love CS Lewis. Hes one of my favorite authors. Though I prefer the Space Troligy. Have you read that one?
I like his other books as well like The Great Divorce which is about a bus ride through hell. He was an interesting guy, CS. Lewis.
GrayGradi
07-21-2001, 06:50 AM
My chaacter names aren't very significant, and both have military origins.
GrayGradi was simply an attempt to come up with an IC type name, and was inspired by the Tom Clancy style naming -- Red October happens to be one of my favorite books. (Yeah -- Clancy's politics suck, and I try to read library copies of his books rather than pass money to him, but he spins a great story.)
Tuttle (who really doesn't exist) also has a military origin; any of you closer to my age, or who watch a lot of late night re-runs might recognize the origin. [:)]

I think one of the funniest jokes in the entire series was listing "special guest: Captain Tuttle...as himself" in the credits of that episode. It still makes me chuckle!

Ahoy!
I'm still alive in case any of you noticed I was missing for a weeks... (sure you did). My computer went boom (kinda) and I've been becoming increasingly lazy.
The name Lerris was stolen from a series of books by L.E. Modestat Jr.(bad spelling, I'm sure of it). Lerris is the main character of the series and is actually threatened with exile quite a few times, which is why I chose the name. I NEVER tried to rp though... it scares me lots. =D
I'd suggest you all read the series; it's incredibly simple and engrossing. I'll read past the third book one day, really. That is, after I finish the fourth Harry Potter (so @$##ing addicting!). See you all after I bug Apple tech support!
-Lerris, the grammerless Hufflepuff
P.S.- Kiri, I started Broken Crown after taking 4 hours and 3 confused Border employees (they should have an education requirement, really) to find it. All I remembered was "sun" and "Michelle"... *sigh* And yes, it's complex and incredibly intimidating, but it looks better than some other books I've been reading lately (they're like nicotine but marketed towards a younger audience). =D

Ack. Almost forgot! All my other characters' names are attempts at me being witty. Quite sad, really. They ussually last about 2 weeks before I murder them. I should just go with the novel approach to character naming more. =/
-Lerris/Holy Mackeral/Admiral Bob/... there's probably more...
