I don't know..... maybe Althus was right about having to post a while before it kicked in... it was not long after making my tenth post that the option appeared where it hadn't been before.

Oh, I figured out the mystery- there's a setting somewhere in the general controls in the admin screens which has a minimum # of posts and minimum # of days registered before you can change your user title. It wasn't in the place I thought it'd be, but I found it and changed both to 0.
